What a CPST Actually Does
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. It is a mouthful, so here is what it means for you.
The Training Behind the Title
A CPST completes a nationally standardized certification course covering seat selection, installation, harness fit, vehicle compatibility, and the current national safety standards. Certification is renewed on a set cycle, so the training stays current as recommendations change.
Every seat that comes through Little Riders Reset is disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled by a certified technician using the manufacturer's instructions for that specific model. Not a general method. Yours.
What You Get Back
Every seat returns with a Certificate of Inspection listing what was checked: expiration date, recall status, harness condition, buckle function, shell integrity, and label legibility.
If something is wrong with your seat, you will know before you strap your child back in. That is the whole point.
Check Your Seat for Recalls
Most parents never find out their seat was recalled. Manufacturers can only notify you if you registered the seat, and almost nobody does. Take 30 seconds and check.
Find the label
Look on the side, back, or bottom of the seat for a sticker with the model number and the date it was made.
Look it up
Search the brand and model on the federal recall database, or scan the North Carolina recall list.
Register it
Mail the card or register online with the manufacturer, so they can reach you directly next time.
NHTSA Recall Search
The official federal database. Choose the Car Seat tab and search your seat's brand and model.
Search NHTSABuckle Up NC Recall List
The state list from the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, updated when new recalls are announced.
Open the NC ListUltimate Car Seat Guide
Not a recall list. It tells you which type of seat your child belongs in for their age and size.
Open the GuideThree Things Most Parents Miss
Car seats expire
Plastic degrades and standards change. Your seat has an expiration date molded into the shell or printed on a label. Find it before you need it.
Crashes retire seats
After a moderate or severe crash, a seat is done, even when it looks perfect. Damage to the structure is not something you can see.
Registration is free
Mail the card or register online with the manufacturer. It takes two minutes and it is the only way they can warn you about a recall.
Questions Parents Ask
The real ones, answered straight.
Is my car seat safe to use after you clean it?
Here is the honest answer. We inspect your seat against current safety standards, check it for recalls, and return it with a Certificate of Inspection listing everything we looked at. If you share your child's current height and weight when you book, we also check those against the manufacturer's limits for your specific seat and tell you whether your child still fits it, or whether it is time to move to the next stage.
What we will not do is tell you a seat is guaranteed safe, because no one can. Safety comes down to the manufacturer's design, your vehicle, and a correct installation every single time. Our job is to make sure nothing is hiding from you, so the decision you make is an informed one.
What products actually touch my child's seat?
Only manufacturer-approved, child-safe products. Plant-based, fragrance-free cleaners on the shell and frame. Child-safe detergents on the cover and harness pads. For the worst messes, child-safe enzyme cleaners from the same family used in baby laundry detergent. No bleach, no solvents, no harsh chemicals, and nothing with a perfume covering up what is underneath.
Want to see the actual list? Email hello@littleridersreset.com and we will send you every product we use, brand by brand. If something on it does not work for your family, tell us and we will work with you.
How do I know it goes back together correctly?
Because it is put back together by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician following the manufacturer's manual for your exact model. Every seat is photographed before disassembly, reassembled to the manual, and given a final safety check before it comes back to your door.
What if my seat is expired or has been in a crash?
We will not clean it for continued use, and we will tell you why. You will get a clear explanation of what we found, what the manufacturer says about it, and what your next step is. We would rather lose the booking than hand back a seat we would not put our own child in.
Do you clean the harness straps?
Yes, using the manufacturer's approved method for your seat. Harness webbing is the one part where the wrong cleaning method can quietly weaken the material, so we never use a product or technique the manufacturer prohibits. This is exactly the kind of thing the certification is for.
When do you pick up and when do I get it back?
Leave the seat on your porch during your evening pickup window and it comes back to your doorstep before your day starts. No doorbell, no handoff, no interruption to bedtime. Pickup nights rotate week to week across Moore County, and every open night shows on the booking calendar.
Do I need to be home?
No. That is the whole design. Your seat goes out on the porch, it comes back to the porch freshly wrapped, and you never have to coordinate a single thing.
The one exception is Reinstall at Return. If you choose it when you book, we need you there in the morning so we can put the seat back in your car and walk you through it.
What happens if it rains?
Your seat is wrapped for the trip and it never sits out in weather. If a storm makes pickup unsafe, you get a text and we move you to the next available night at no charge.
Do you clean the base too?
Yes, the base comes with the seat and gets cleaned as part of the same service. It collects more crumbs than the seat does.
Can you clean a seat I am about to sell?
Absolutely, and we offer a Resale Ready option with documentation and before and after photos so buyers can see exactly what they are getting.
To be clear about what that is and is not: it is proof of a professional cleaning and inspection, not a certification that the seat is safe for another family to use. That call belongs to the buyer and the manufacturer.
